How the Marine Corps JEPES score works
JEPES — the Junior Enlisted Performance Evaluation System — is how Lance Corporals and Corporals compete for promotion. Instead of a single cutting score built from time in service and time in grade alone, JEPES scores what a Marine has actually done across four categories, then adds bonus points.
Warfighting, physical toughness, mental agility and command input are each worth up to 250 points, and the bonus category is worth up to 100. Raw performance in each category is converted to points and weighted, so a 300 PFT is not worth the same number of JEPES points at every rank.
This calculator uses the scoring tables from MCO 1616.1 — the same data that powers the CorpsGuide app — so your estimate here matches what the app gives you.
The five JEPES categories
Warfighting
Up to 250 points
Rifle qualification plus your MCMAP belt. Both convert to a 0–100 value first, and the pair is weighted to the category maximum.
Physical toughness
Up to 250 points
Your PFT and CFT totals, each converted through the table for your rank and then weighted. The conversions are steeper at Corporal.
Mental agility
Up to 250 points
MarineNet courses, a civilian degree, off-duty education in service and in grade, and MOS courses and qualifications.
Command input
Up to 250 points
Three command marks — MOS/mission, leadership and character — each from 0.0 to 5.0, scaled and averaged.
Bonus
Up to 100 points
Special duty and B-billet schools, plus command recommendation points. Capped at 100 no matter how many apply.
What earns points
The values the calculator applies before each category is weighted and capped:
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Rifle qualification | 0–100, from your destroys and drills |
| MCMAP belt | 0–100, on your rank's belt scale |
| PFT and CFT | 0–100 each, from your rank's conversion table |
| MarineNet courses | 1 point each, up to 40 |
| Civilian degree | Associate's 10, bachelor's 20 |
| Off-duty education (CRS-SVS, CRS-GRD) | 5 points per course, up to 4 courses each |
| MOS courses and qualifications | CDI 30, CDQAR or QASO 40, CDI and QASO 70, CDQAR and QASO 80 |
| Command marks | 0.0–5.0 each, scaled to 250 and averaged |
| Special duty and B-billet schools | 50 points each |
| Command recommendation | 20 points each, up to 5 |
Warfighting, physical toughness and mental agility are weighted after these values are summed; every category is then capped at its maximum, so stacking bonuses beyond the cap adds nothing.
MCMAP belt values
Belts are worth different amounts depending on rank, because Corporals are scored on the full belt progression:
| Belt | PVT–LCpl | Cpl |
|---|---|---|
| Unqualified | 0 | 0 |
| Tan | 33 | 16 |
| Gray | 67 | 33 |
| Green | 100 | 50 |
| Green instructor | — | 66 |
| Brown | — | 83 |
| Brown instructor or above | — | 100 |
These values feed the warfighting category alongside your rifle score. Belts above green are only scored at Corporal.
Rank brackets
Privates, Privates First Class and Lance Corporals are all scored on the Lance Corporal tables — for MCMAP and for the PFT/CFT conversions alike. Corporals have their own, steeper tables and the longer belt scale, so the same raw performance is worth fewer points as a Corporal. Select your rank first; the calculator resets your belt when you change it, because the two scales are not interchangeable.
Frequently asked questions
What is JEPES?
The Junior Enlisted Performance Evaluation System — the composite scoring system the Marine Corps uses to rank Lance Corporals and Corporals for promotion, based on warfighting, physical toughness, mental agility, command input and bonus points.
How many points is each JEPES category worth?
Warfighting, physical toughness, mental agility and command input are each worth up to 250 points, and the bonus category is worth up to 100.
Does rank change my JEPES score?
Yes. Corporals are scored on their own MCMAP and PFT/CFT tables, which are steeper than the tables used for Lance Corporals and below, so identical performance converts to fewer points.
How is the warfighting score calculated?
Your rifle qualification (from range destroys and drills) and your MCMAP belt each convert to a 0–100 value, and the two are weighted together into the 250-point category.
What earns bonus points?
Drill Instructor School, Recruiter School, Marine Security Guard School, Combat Instructor and Marine Corps Security Forces are worth 50 points each, and command recommendation points are worth 20 each — but the category is capped at 100.
Is this my official JEPES score?
No. This is an estimate for planning. Your official composite is computed and published by the Marine Corps — always confirm against MCO 1616.1 and your command.
