Ribbons are not worn in the order you earned them. Every award has a fixed place in an order of precedence set by Marine Corps uniform regulations, and your rack is assembled from that order — highest precedence first, regardless of when it was awarded.
That is why this builder has no drag-and-drop: you choose which ribbons you hold, and the order is decided for you. If two Marines hold the same awards, their racks look identical.

Three rules that decide your rack
Precedence, not chronology
Personal decorations come before unit awards, which come before service and campaign awards. Within each group, order is fixed by regulation.
The short row goes on top
When your ribbons do not divide evenly, the incomplete row sits at the top and every row beneath it is full. The builder does this automatically.
Three or four to a row
Racks are worn three or four ribbons wide depending on the uniform and how many you hold. Switch between them above to see both.
The order of precedence, in groups
Awards fall into broad groups, worn in this order:
- Personal decorations for valor and achievement, starting with the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross.
- Unit awards — the Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation and the like.
- Campaign, service and training awards, including the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
- Foreign and international decorations, worn last.
